Colonials Oarsmen Press #10 Boston University, Defeat #18 Dartmouth College

May 4, 2009

CHICAGO, IL - Racing on the Cal-Sag Channel in Blue Island, IL Saturday morning, the #17 George Washington men's varsity eight pressed #10 Boston University to the wire, falling in the end by 1.1 seconds to the Terriers.

"Boston University is a strong and talented team, " said GW head coach Greg Myhr. "It was going to take a very good effort from our men to run with that crew. We're taking steps here and our team is excited with some of the things we're starting to be able to do, but none of us were surprised that BU was the better crew this past weekend. That said, expectations are rising awfully fast on this team, and I don't think we're tapped out just yet." In the 2nd varsity and freshman eight racing, the theme remained similar with the Colonials fighting hard, but falling to the Terriers - 5.3 seconds back for the 2nd varsity, and 10.7 back in the freshman race.

In the afternoon, GW squared off against #18 Dartmouth College, winning by almost 7 seconds in the varsity and nearly 13 seconds in the 2nd varsity. The freshman squad put in a terrific race, but fell to the highly regarded MIT frosh by just under 7 seconds. "In my four years here, this team has put in an enormous volume of work, jumped into an incredibly competitive league (the EARC), and raced very hard... but we haven't done a lot of winning yet. When we can bring one home, especially against such quality competition, it's very meaningful for us," said Myhr.

Next up for the Colonials: The Eastern Sprints (EARC League Championships) on Sunday, May 10 in Worcester, MA.
