GW Men's Rowing Completes Day 1 at IRA Nationals
Colonials Set Matchups For Saturday's Semifinals

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The George Washington men's rowing team competed in a total of seven races on Friday across preliminary heats and repechages on day one of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on Lake Mercer.
Saturday's semifinal seedings are complete with the Varsity 8 and JV8 advancing to third/fourth level semifinals. The Freshmen 8 will compete in its repechage on Saturday morning while the Varsity 4 will compete in Sunday's third-level final.
The Varsity 8 kicked off Friday's racing with a fourth-place showing in its morning heat. With calm water and near ideal conditions in the morning session, the Colonials completed the 2,000-meter course in 5:54.42. Defending National Champion Washington won the heat in 5:37.85, followed by Yale (5:38.93), Cornell (5:39.40), GW, Dartmouth (5:57.03) and UC San Diego (6:08.11).
The V8 returned to the water in the afternoon and finished in second place in its repechage, completing the course in 5:44.62, just three seconds behind Navy (5:41.75). Drexel took third in 5:51.02 and Gonzaga followed in 5:55.79 for fourth place.
The Varsity 8 will row in the third/fourth level semifinal at 12:00 p.m. against Gonzaga, Syracuse, FIT, Hobart and UCSD. The top three boats will advance to the third-level final on Sunday with the remaining boats competing in the fourth-level final.
GW is aiming to better its program-best mark of 15th place in the Varsity 8 standings which was tied at last year's event after first achieving the mark in 2009.
The JV8 placed fifth in its morning heat, clocking in at 6:04.81, before finishing third out of four crews in the repechage.
The Colonials finished in 5:55.25 in the repechage, behind first-place Penn (5:47.77), Syracuse (5:50.33) and ahead of UCSD (6:11.90).
The JV8 will row against Holy Cross, Gonzaga, Drexel, Harvard and FIT in Saturday's third/fourth level semifinal at 12:30 p.m. The top three boats in the semifinal will advance to the third-level final on Sunday while the remaining boats will compete in the fourth-level final.
GW's Freshmen 8 finished in fourth place out of six crews in its morning heat, finishing the 2,000-meter course in 6:12.03. The Colonials will row in a repechage on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. against Drexel, Wisconsin, Cornell and Navy. The top two teams from each repechage will advance to the Grand Finals on Sunday while the remaining crews will race in the Petite Finals.
The Varsity 4 totaled a pair of sixth-place finishes in both its morning heat and repechage and will compete in Sunday's third-level final at 8:50 a.m.
