Men's Rowing Opens Season at Occoquan
Oct. 13, 2008
WOODBRIDGE, VA - The George Washington Men's Rowing opened its fall season yesterday at the Occoquan Chase Regatta on the Occoquan Reservoir in Woodbridge, VA. The day was highlighted by a 1st and 3rd place finish by the Colonials oarsmen in the Open Men's Eight division, making this the first time in four years that GW has won this event.
"We've finished second to Virginia for the past three years, but came out on top today," said GW head coach Greg Myhr. Virginia, starting first, missed a course buoy late in the race, taking a significantly shorter course and incurring a time penalty. "I'm thrilled to come away with a win, and I was very pleased with how our team raced. However, I would have loved to see how the teams matched up over the same course and without any time penalties. Given what the team thought of their race and also what I was able to see from shore, I suspect the times would have been very close."
The second entries for both schools finished within two tenths of second of each other over the three mile course. In the Open Men's Four division, GW swept the event, finishing first, second and third.
The GW Novice Men's Eight left no doubt as to who was the class of the field, as they won the Collegiate Novice Eight division by over a minute over the next closest crew, Virginia. The 2nd Novice Eight finished in fifth place. "We've known from the beginning of the year that this is a strong class, and it's terrific to see them capitalize on their ability in their first collegiate race," said Myhr. "There is an enormous amount of work to do before these frosh are ready to compete with the top teams in the country, but this is a very encouraging start." The Novice Men also swept the Collegiate Novice Four event, taking first, second, and third.
Next up for the Colonials is the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, MA on Sunday, October 19th.
