GW Men's Rowing Set for Pennsylvania Invitational
Colonials Open Spring Season on Schuylkill River
March 27, 2014
The Colonials will compete in a total of 11 races in three sessions spanning Friday and Saturday. The Colonials will face Northeastern and Drexel, followed by host Pennsylvania, leading up to the annual McCausland Cup in the weekend finale Varsity 8 race against the Quakers.
Now in its seventh year, the McCausland Cup is annually awarded to the winner of the varsity race between the Colonials and the Quakers. Penn has won the last three meetings to move ahead 4-2 in the series.
"It inspires us for sure," said Head Coach Mark Davis. "We haven't won it in the past three years so we are certainly hungry to get the cup back here to D.C. I know that when we are training through the winter this race is definitely circled on our calendar. When we are tired of being indoors and tired of seeing the snow, this race is motivating us all along. It's a big race for the team and a very good rivalry with Penn."
"It is a challenging weekend to start things off," explained Coach Davis. "First of all, facing Northeastern as your first race of the season is definitely a challenge. They finished fourth overall last season at IRA's and are a very strong program. To race them right away is a daunting challenge but we are embracing it. And racing back-to-back on Saturday is good and bad. It is good because we can try some different things in terms of race strategy and how we want to perform but obviously it can be exhausting. It is a lot more work than they are used to doing but I think it's good for us."
