WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's rowing team, fresh off its first-ever Oliver T. Carr Bowl Championship at the GW Invitational, will compete at this weekend's Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships on Friday and Saturday on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
GW's Freshmen 8 won gold at last year's championship while the Varsity 8 and Freshmen 8 each captured a gold medal at the 2012 installment of the annual event.
The Colonials will enter their Varsity 8, JV8 and Freshmen 8 into this weekend's event, which begins with preliminary heats on Friday afternoon.
The Freshmen 8 will open racing on Friday at 3:46 p.m. against Florida, Colorado, Washington University and Georgia Tech with the top three boats advancing to Saturday's semifinals. With 22 boats competing over four heats, the next three fastest times (not a top-three finisher) will also advance to the semifinals.
The JV8 will follow in its heat at 4:07 p.m. against Temple, North Carolina, Purdue, Oklahoma City and Washington University. With 12 boats competing over two heats, the top three from each heat will automatically advance to Saturday afternoon's Grand Final while the rest will race in the Petite Final.
The Varsity 8 heat will launch at 6:16 p.m. against Dayton, Rollins, Emory and Oklahoma City. The Varsity 8 heats feature 20 crews over four heats. The top three from each heat advance to Saturday's semifinals while the next six fastest times will advance to the C-Level Final.
