Former Goalie Named Volunteering Goalkeeping Coach
"As a former player and alum, we are really excited to have Derek join our staff," said Head Coach Craig Jones. "After a successful playing career he has been coaching in the D.C. area and pursuing his coaching licenses. His close ties to the program make him a great addition to our staff. He will primarily work with our goalkeepers in all aspects of their development."
Biss was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2004 Atlantic 10 Championship after allowing just one goal in three games and tying a tournament record with two shutouts as the Colonials won their second A-10 title. Biss then posted another clean sheet against North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for GW's second-ever postseason victory. He finished his junior season with six shutouts, the most by a Colonials' keeper since 2000.
A member of the men's soccer team from 2002-05, Biss ranks second all-time at GW with 274 career saves.
"It is great to be back at GW - in some ways it feels like I never left," said Biss. "I am looking forward to working with Coach Jones and the staff to achieve success during the upcoming season."
Last season, Biss served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of the District of Columbia, where he worked the goalkeepers, helping the Firebirds to a 7-6-3 record. He has also worked as a coach and administrator with D.C. Stoddert Soccer since 2010.
Following his graduation, Biss served as a strength and conditioning coach at GW for two years while pursuing his master's degree.
A native of Pittsfield, Mass., Biss earned his bachelor's degree in history from GW in 2006 and his Master's of Tourism Administration with a concentration in sports management from GW in 2008. He currently holds a USSF National B License and USSF National Youth License, as well as an NSCAA Level II Goalkeeping License.
