Men's Soccer Opens With 3-0 Exhibition Win at James Madison
Aug. 18, 2011
HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior teammates Mike Burke and Jake Davis accounted for all three goals as the George Washington men's soccer team opened its preseason exhibition season with a 3-0 shutout victory at James Madison Thursday afternoon. Burke scored twice and Davis added a third for the Colonials, who opened preseason training just two days ago. The Dukes, who compiled a 9-7-2 overall record in 2010, were chosen to finish eighth in the competitive Colonial Athletic Association. Junior goalkeepers Brendan Lafferty and Alejandro Almodovar split time in net to combine for the clean sheet. Lafferty was credited with two first-half saves with the teams' combining for seven shots apiece. Davis entered as a forward substitute in the first half and put GW on the scoreboard in the 45th minute with a 20-yard shot to the lower right corner. The Colonials held onto the 1-0 lead through halftime. GW then capitalized on a pair of set pieces in the second frame to secure the road victory. Junior midfielder Zach Abaie's 60th-minute corner kick to the back post found sophomore midfielder Bailey Hinners, who headed the ball back across the box to Burke for a five-yard volley into goal. Burke then capped the scoring in the 83rd minute when he nodded home an endline free kick from junior midfielder Mattia Melillo. The Colonials will host two exhibition matches at Mount Vernon Field next week in preparation for their Sept. 1 season opener against American at the DC College Cup in Fairfax, Va. GW welcomes Old Dominion and Daniel Lidster, son of Colonials' head coach George Lidster, to Mount Vernon this Sunday at 5:00 pm, followed by Catholic on Thursday at 5:00 pm.
