Aug. 19, 2012
NORFOLK, Va. - In its final tune-up before Friday's season opener, the George Washington men's soccer team fell to No. 23 Old Dominion, 3-0, on Saturday evening at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
GW took the first shot of the game in the sixth minute, but senior Seth Rudolph's attempt was turned away by ODU goalie Victor Francoz, and the Colonials did not record another shot until junior Abdul Shaban's attempt sailed high more than 73 minutes later.
The Monarchs got on the board in the 11th minute when Ivan Miltar sent a pass to Tim Hopkinson, who delivered a tap pass to Gideon Asante on the right side. Asante drilled a shot to the far post past GW redshirt freshman keeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe for the 1-0 lead, which ODU took into the intermission.
In the 59th, Asante slid a pass to Chris Harmon, who sent a shot to the left of van der Merwe to put the Monarchs on top, 2-0, and Sidney Rivera added an insurance goal for ODU just over eight minutes later, knocking a through pass from Harmon past van der Merwe for the final 3-0 margin.
Van der Merwe made two saves in 66:33 between the pipes, while senior Alejandro Almodovar also stopped a pair of shots for the Colonials. ODU outshot GW, 16-3, in the game.
The Colonials open the 2012 campaign on Friday, when they host Long Island at 4 p.m. at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
