HARRISONBURG, Va. - In its final exhibition match of the preseason, the George Washington men's soccer team fell to host James Madison, 1-0, on Saturday evening at University Park.
The Dukes scored the lone goal of the game in the 24th minute when Josh Grant centered a pass Tom Fouhy and tapped it in from six yards out.
The Colonials' best opportunity of the game came in the second half when sophomore Ross Higgins beat his defender in the corner, but his header went just wide.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe made five saves in net.
The Colonials open the regular season next weekend at the annual D.C. College Cup at George Mason Stadium on the campus of George Mason University. GW will take on district rivals American and Howard on Friday and Sunday, respectively, with both matches beginning at 5 p.m.
