Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener Over Georgetown, 3-1
Senior Matt Osborne Scores Twice to Lead Colonials
Aug. 30, 2002
WASHINGTON, DC - Senior captain Matt Osborne (Bingham, Notts, England/Toothill Comprehensive) led the Colonials over the Hoyas in their season-opener with two scores and an assist, as George Washington won the first game of the 2002 DC College Cup hosted by American University, 3-1.
GW (1-0) fell behind early in the first half, as Georgetown (0-1) got on the board with a hard shot by Kevin Sindelar that found the back of the net in the left corner past junior keeper Eric Lund (Wasilla, AK/Bradenton Academy (FL)) in the eighth minute of play.
The Colonials tied the match late in the first half when Osborne took a quick feed outside the box from junior striker Arnar Johannsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/ C.C. of Iceland) and placed a low shot into the right hand corner of the goal past GU's keeper, senior Brian O'Hagan in the 39th minute of the match.
The two teams battled to a stalemate for the majority of the second half, as neither team could capitalize on numerous runs at their opponents' goal. GW would break through in the 80th minute, when Johannsson took a short pass in the box from freshman forward Frank Ambrosio (Orlando, FL/Bishop Moore Catholic), and placed it past O'Hagan into the left corner. Osborne, who made the primary pass to Ambrosio, was awarded an assist on the play.
Leading 2-1, GW added another goal with 45 seconds reaming in the match, when senior midfielder Mike Goldman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) made a touch pass to Osborne off a free kick at the top of the box. Osborne put home a low, pinpoint shot in the left corner to put the game out of reach, 3-1.
The Colonials return to American on Sunday to face Howard in their second game of the DC College Cup in a noon match.
