Johannsson Scores Twice in First Victory of the Season
Sept. 6, 2003
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Arnar Johannsson scored twice and freshman Joseph Siegel recorded two assists, as the Colonials rolled to their first victory of the season in their home opener over the visiting Radford Highlanders.
GW (1-2-0) got on the board just five minutes into the game when sophomore Andre Chapman broke through RU's defense on the left wing and sent a rocket at the goal which the Highlanders' keeper Dan Stevens couldn't handle as it glanced off his gloves and into the net.
RU would even the score at one apiece nine minutes later when Erik Sokolik netted a free kick from the top of the box off a GW foul in the 14th minute of play. Seth Stoner assisted on the indirect shot.
With time winding down in the first half, the Colonials regained the lead when sophomore Frank Ambrosio scored, lacing a shot past the diving keeper to put GW up 2-1. Junior Matt Miller and Siegel assisted on the score.
The Colonials would extend the lead after the break when Johannsson scored in the opening minute of the second half off a feed from senior Jason Popik. Johannsson collected the pass up the middle in the box and beat the keeper on the right lower corner to lift GW to a 3-1 advantage.
Johannsson, who made his first start of the season after seeing limited time due to an injury the first two games of the season, struck again later in the half when he took another well-placed pass from Seigel launched his second score of the match into the back of the net in the 61st minute.
RU would add a score by Seth Stoner three minutes later when he took a pass from Sokolick in the box and beat GW's keeper Eric Lund from just 10 yards out.
The Colonials would hold the Highlanders scoreless for the balance of the match, and cruised to a 4-2 victory.
GW hosts UMBC in their next match on Wednesday, September 10, in a 3:00 p.m. match at Mt. Vernon Athletic Complex.
