Wildy's OT Penalty Kick Caps Men's Soccer's Comeback Win Over North Florida
Sept. 9, 2007
FARMVILLE, VA - George Washington sophomore midfielder Luke Wildy converted a penalty kick just over two minutes into the first overtime period to lift the Colonials men's soccer team a 4-3 overtime victory versus North Florida on the final day of Longwood's Lancer Invitational on Sunday. GW tallied four unanswered goals to score its second dramatic win in its last three matches. GW (3-1), which defeated Howard 3-2 last Sunday on sophomore Erick Perez-Segnini's game-winning goal with three seconds to play in double overtime, allowed three goals in a 10-minute span in the first half, only to trim its deficit to 3-2 at halftime. Perez-Segnini again was key against North Florida (1-3), netting the equalizer in the 69th minute to force overtime, while Wildy drilled the winning penalty kick in the 93rd minute. The Ospreys began their offensive barrage in the 24th minute on Akil Defreitas' finish on a cross from Shareef Rajkumar. Defreitas was in on UNF's second goal, assisting the first of Oscar Ortiz's consecutive goals in the 28th minute. Ortiz struck again in the 34th minute, flicking a shot over GW goalkeeper Greg Yahr to give North Florida a 3-0 advantage. Senior midfielder Greg McKay helped swing some momentum back to GW with a penalty-kick goal in the 35th minute, and senior forward Abimbola Pedro edged the Colonials to within one goal with a volleyed shot over Ospreys goalkeeper Andrew Calise at the 42:19 mark. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Matt Scheer took over in the second half and made two saves to keep North Florida scoreless, while Perez-Segnini one-touched a service from sophomore back George Garcia into the net to knot the score at 3-3. The win is Scheer's first of the season and second of his career.
Despite the early deficit, GW regrouped to outshoot North Florida, 17-10, and hold a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Colonials return to action Friday at Loyola (MD). Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Longwood Lancer Invitational All-Tournament Team |
