Colonials Host VMI in Home Opener on Saturday
Sep 8, 2013
NEWARK, N.J. - NJIT scored just over 15 minutes into the first half and held on to deal the George Washington men's soccer team a 1-0 loss on Sunday evening at Lubetkin Field.
After entering the match less than four minutes earlier, the Highlanders' Blazic Matija saw his initial shot saved by GW sophomore goalie Jean-Pierre van der Merwe, but he put the rebound past the keeper into the middle of the net for the 1-0 NJIT (1-2-1) lead in the 16th minute.
The goal proved enough for the hosts as NJIT goalie Alexander Czempik turned away all three of GW's shots on goal.
The Highlanders outshot the Colonials, 12-10, but GW held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks. Sophomore Philip McQuitty took a team-high three shots, and van der Merwe recorded three saves.
The Colonials (2-2-0) return to action on Saturday when they host VMI in their home opener at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
