WASHINGTON - Sophomore Dylan Lightbourn netted the gamewinner for GW men's soccer with just seconds left in regulation on Sunday afternoon to give the Colonials a 1-0 victory over visiting Navy at the GW Soccer Feld on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue (2-1-2) put on a strong display throughout the contest, outshooting the Midshipmen (1-3-1), 16-0, on the day.
Lightbourn logged the first shot of the day in the fourth minute to jumpstart a strong possession half for the Colonials. GW kept control of the ball, earning four corner kicks by the 20th minute.
Lightbourn had an opportunity with his shot on target in the 37th minute, but Navy made the save. Just moments later in the 39th minute, senior Garrett Heine had a chance of his own, shooting a laser off of a set piece from the top right corner of the box, but Navy tipped the ball over the crossbar for the save to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
Senior Tobi Adewole threatened in the 67th minute, but yet another Midshipmen save prevented damage.
The Colonials remained aggressive as freshman Colin Anderson nearly broke the stalemate in the 72nd minute, firmly striking the ball from the top of the box, but Navy's keeper leapt just enough to tip the ball over the crossbar once again.
Lightbourn nearly converted in the 89th minute when his header attempt sailed just high. The gamweinner came just moments later in the 90th minute as sophomore Alastair Berry laced a corner kick into the box. Lightbourn was perfectly positioned by the front post and headed the ball into the back corner of the net to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead with 4.9 seconds left on the clock.
The Midshipmen were not able to threaten in the final seconds as GW claimed the victory on Lightbourn's second goal of the season.
Eight different Colonials took shots in GW's offensive onslaught on Sunday afternoon with Lightbourn leading all players with five shots - two on goal.
GW also held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Colonials return to action on Tuesday as they visit Wake Forest for a 7 p.m. match.
