Patriots Second Half Rally Sinks Colonials
Sept. 13, 2003
FAIRFAX, VA - The Colonials lost a 3-2 match at George Mason as the Patriots rallied to score two goals midway through the second half to hand GW their fourth loss of the season.
GW (1-4) trailed at the half but staged a rally of its own, scoring two, second half goals to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman forward Joseph Siegel scored his first collegiate goal in the 59th minute when he sent a 30-yard shot over the keeper's head to knot the match at 1-1.
The Colonials took the lead just three minutes later when senior Arnar Johannsson scored his fourth goal of the season, converting a long pass into the penalty box from sophomore Benjamin Mortimer. Johannsson beat a Patriot defender to the ball, than put home an eight-yard shot past the diving GMU (4-0-1) keeper.
GW would only hold the 2-1 advantage for a short time however, as the Patriots rallied to score two goals just five minutes later. GMU sophomore Steve Alabi collected a deflected pass in the box and beat GW keeper Derek Biss to tie the game at 2-2.
GMU scored what would turn out to be the game-winner 67 seconds later as Junior Karim Manneh scored off a free kick, heading home the Patriots' third goal of the game.
GW next travels to the West Coast to face San Francisco at the Adidas Classic in Santa Clara, CA on September 18, at 8:00 pm EST.
