Men's Soccer Halts Hawks in Overtime, 3-2
Sept. 18, 2002
WEST LONG BEACH, NJ - Junior Fabio Andrade scored the winning goal in the 99th minute as the George Washington men's soccer team edged the Monmouth Hawks 3-2, in an overtime match.
Andrade's score, his first of the season, broke the Colonials' (3-3) three-game losing streak. Andrade put home a pass from junior defender Justin Evans, who recorded his second assist of the game on the play.
GW got on the board first in the 10th minute of the match when sophomore midfielder Rob Kirchner converted a pass from senior Matthew Osborne through the box to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead that they would take into the half.
Monmouth (1-4) tied the match in the 67th minute when Nick Randazzo scored on a penalty kick. GW would strike back just eight minutes later off an Osborne goal. Osborne initially put a penalty shot off the post that was collected by senior midfielder Michael Goldman who made a quick pass to Evans, who's touch pass was placed into the back of the net by Osborne.
The Hawks quickly tied the match two minutes later in the 77th minute, sending the game into overtime where Andrade assumed the role of hero, ending the game in the 99th minute of play.
The Colonials travel to face Radford for their second of four-straight road matches, facing the Highlanders on Sunday, September 22, at 1:00 p.m.
