Big First Half Leads Men's Soccer Past Radford, 3-1

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC (September 23, 2001) - Junior Matthew Osborne (Bingham, Notts, England/Toothill Comprehensive School), senior Michael Goldman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and sophomore Arnar Johannsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/C.C. of Iceland) all scored first half goals to lead the Colonials past Radford University, 3-1, this afternoon, Sept. 23, at the GW Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. With the win the Colonials improved to 3-2 on the season.

Osborne gave the Colonials a 1-0 lead at the 15:14 mark as he blasted a direct kick from the top of the box past Radford keeper Andrew Essey and into the lower left corner of the net. It was Osborne's fourth goal on the season and the 20th of his GW career.

Goldman put the Colonials up 2-0 three minutes later as he took a feed from sophomore Fabio Andrade (Stoughton, MA/Xaverian Academy Brothers) and beat Essey to the lower right corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

Johannsson made it 3-0 at the 33:42 mark with a beautiful goal. Johannsson was in close on the left side of the box as he corralled a long ball in the air from senior Fridrik Omarsson (Garbaber, Iceland/C.C. of Iceland) and served the ball over his defender and Essey in one motion for his first goal of the season.

Radford's T.J. Rolfing scored off of a cross from Erick Sokolik to make it 3-1 at the 40:13 mark, but the Highlanders would get no closer as the Colonials remained perfect at their new home field.

GW will open up Atlantic 10 play in their next game on Saturday, Sept. 29, when they face new Atlantic 10 member, Richmond, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
