Berhanu and Rudolph Tally in GW Men's Soccer 2-2 Draw With Stetson
Sept. 25, 2011
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Yoni Berhanu and junior Seth Rudolph each scored their team-leading fourth goals of the season and the George Washington men's soccer team tied Stetson, 2-2, at Jacksonville's Ashley Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. Berhanu converted his third penalty kick of the season in the 73rd minute and took the corner kick that led to Rudolph's first-half equalizer to finish with three points in the match. The Colonials surrendered a 38th-minute header goal from Hatters forward Jonathan Mendoza to trail 1-0, but Berhanu linked with sophomore Bailey Hinners and Rudolph on a corner to equalize just seconds later and the teams entered intermission even at 1-1. Berhanu then improved to a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty-kick conversions this season with a successful spot attempt in the 73rd minute to give GW a 2-1 advantage. Stetson (3-4-1), which defeated GW league-rival Temple, 1-0, in its previous match Sept. 18, got its equalizer via Luis Ocejo's 20-yard free kick in the 87th minute. The Hatters finished with a 15-8 shot advantage, including a 3-1 edge in 20 minutes of overtime. However, Colonials sophomore Alex Sandland had a chance at a golden goal with 16 seconds left in the second extra session, but Hatters goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl put a save out of play in the final moments. Junior goalkeeper Brendan Lafferty made his third start of the season and posted three saves on Stetson's five shots on target. Schnabl also amassed three stops on GW's five shots on frame. Both Berhanu and Rudolph lead GW and rank among the Atlantic 10 Conference's leaders with four goals and nine points so far this fall.
GW moves to 2-3-2 on the season and will complete non-conference play at Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C., next Saturday night. |
