Men's Soccer Victorious Versus Towson 4-1 On Two Goals From Johannsson
GW Scores Four Goals In The Second Half For Their Second Win Of The Season
Sept. 27, 2003
WASHINGTON, DC - After battling through a scoreless first half, the Colonials scored four goals in the secon frame to secure a 4-1 victory over the visiting Towson Tigers. GW was led by senior Arnar Johannsson ((Reykjavik, Iceland/C.C. of Iceland) who had a two goal performance and now leads the team with seven this season. Johannsson also assisted on the final GW goal for an outstanding five point performance in the Colonials second win of the season.
GW's Trent Wilee (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) opened the scoring for the Colonials when he finished a beautiful double assist in the 58th minute of play. Wilee's goal was off of a corner kick from Jason Popik (Syosset, NY/Syosset) who served the ball to the middle of the box where Jeremy Catlin (Clarksville, MD/Oakland Mills) flicked a header to a breaking Wilee.
Johannsson then scored the next two Colonials goals within a five minute span including the game-winner in the 65th minute. Johannsson was assisted first by Jeremiah Burke (Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic) and later Steve Brown (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland). Johannsson then added an assist of his own returning the favor by playing the ball to Popik who assisted Johannsson's. Joseph Siegel (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) also got credit for his season's third assist on the final goal in GW's second double assist goal of the match.
GW was within 10 minutes of securing their first shutout of the season when Towson scored the final goal of the game. Nigel Marples scored by following a rebound from teammate Steve Fell who earned the assist. The Colonials play next on Friday at Massachusetts at 3:30 to open Atlantic 10 play.
