Men's Soccer Tops The Mount, 2-1, Behind Stadler's Late Goals

Sept. 27, 2008

Final Stats

EMMITSBURG, MD - Junior Andy Stadler, the nation's leading goal scorer, netted goals in the 82nd and 85th minutes to lift the George Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon.

The victory marks the third straight win - all on the road - for GW (4-2-1), which entered Saturday's match ranked sixth in the NSCAA Middle Atlantic regional rankings. The Mount is currently ranked ninth in the NSCAA North Atlantic regional rankings.

Stadler increased his season goal total to nine and point total to 19 through seven matches with his two strikes Saturday. He entered the match atop the latest NCAA Division I statistical rankings with 1.17 goals per game and was tied for second with 2.50 points per game.

Mount St. Mary's (3-5-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute on Chris Wheeler's finish from a Steve Pathroff service from near midfield. The goal was the first redshirt senior Matt Scheer and the Colonials' defense has allowed in more than 289 minutes of soccer.

Stadler got the equalizer 15 minutes later when he beat Mount goalkeeper Chris Davis after being set-up by freshman Ryan Ruffing. Ruffing is now tied for the team lead with three assists this season.

Stadler would strike again less than three minutes later, controlling an outlet from junior Erick Perez-Segnini and finishing his Atlantic 10-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season.

Scheer finished with four saves on 12 shots faced to earn his fourth victory of the season, while Davis made six saves on GW's 19 shots.

GW will put its three-match winning streak on the line Tuesday night at Virginia Tech, a team that reached the NCAA College Cup last fall. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
