Men's Soccer Fall to Bonnies, 3-1

Oct. 4, 2002

OLEAN, NY- The Colonials were unable to overcome a 2-0 first half lead by St. Bonaventure, losing their conference-opener to the Bonnies, 3-1 at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The Bonnies (6-2, 1-0) scored early when senior midfielder John Phoumanny scored at the 3:56 mark to give SBU the lead, 1-0. The Bonnies added another score in the 28th minute when freshman Dan Bowen put away a cross from fellow freshman Ryan Ercoli.

GW (4-5, 0-1) got on the board just 1:11 into the second half, when junior forward Arnar Johannsson netted his seventh goal of the season on a penalty shot, halving SBU's lead, 2-1. Johannsson returned to the lineup after missing three matches due to injury.

However, Phoumanny stuck again, recording his second goal of the match off a rebound shot from Geron DuPorte off the crossbar that Poumanny put between the pipes in the 78th minute.

The Colonials return to action on Sunday, Oct. 6, when they face Duquesne in Pittsburgh, PA in a 1:00 p.m. match.
