Men's Soccer Holds On For 1-0 Victory Over Rhode Island

Oct. 5, 2003

Box Score

KINGSTON, RI - The George Washington University's men's soccer team bounced back from a loss on Friday to secure 1-0 victory over Rhode Island on Sunday, October 5 at the URI Soccer Complex. The win evened the Colonials conference record to 1-1 and improved their overall record to 3-7. In turn, Rhode Island fell to 4-6-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Atlantic 10.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with Rhode Island holding a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Derek Biss (Pittsfield, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon) was huge for the Colonials in the first half coming up with six saves and making nine saves for the game in recording the shutout.

In the second half, Rhode Island again controlled action early, but it was George Washington that got on the board first as sophomore Steve Brown (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) collected a rebound in the box and fed it to freshman Joseph Siegel (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) who buried a shot into the lower left corner of the net to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead at the 67:15 mark.

Despite several chances from Rhode Island, including a pair in the final minutes of the contest, George Washington held on for the 1-0 victory.

The Colonials will take to the field again on Friday, October 10 when they take on St. Bonaventure at the GW-Mount Vernon Soccer Field at 3:00 pm.
