Men's Soccer Loses in Final Seconds to Duquesne, 3-2
Dukes Goal with Nine Seconds Left Dooms Colonials
Oct. 6, 2002
PITTSBURGH, PA - The Colonials lost a heartbreaker to Duquesne in the closing seconds, as the Dukes' Dan Hartung completed their comeback with a goal in the 89th minute.
GW (4-6, 0-2) took an early lead behind a goal by junior forward Arnar Johannsson who notched his seventh score of the season off passes from seniors Michael Goldman and Matt Osborne in the 10th minute of play. The Colonials held the Dukes in check for the remainder of the first half, taking the 1-0 lead into the break.
Duquesne (6-1-3, 1-0-1) tied the match at 1-1 in the 62nd minute of the game. GW reclaimed the lead 17 minutes later when Goldman put freshman Frank Ambrosio's pass into the back of the net to give the Colonials the 2-1 lead.
After shutting down the Dukes for the majority of the second half, DU scored a pair of goals in the waning moments of the match to tie, and then snatch the game away from GW in the closing seconds of play.
The Colonials return home to face Dayton on Friday, October 11, in a 3:00 p.m. match at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
