RICHMOND, Va. - George Washington men's soccer scored a goal in each half and dug in late to edge VCU, 2-1, Saturday night at Sports Backers Stadium.

Goals from Oliver Curry and Dylan Lightbourn powered the Colonials to an important Atlantic 10 road victory. They had a two-goal lead halved in the 83rd minute, but they managed to hold on and hand the Rams their first conference loss of the season.

GW (6-6-2, 3-2) needed timely offense and a gritty defensive effort to beat VCU (6-4, 3-1) in a game in which it was outshot 26-5. Curry's 22nd minute free kick provided a lead, Lightbourn's strike added to it in the 79th minute and Thor Arne Höfs anchored the back line with seven saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 22nd Minute -- Curry's curling free kick from about 35 yards out seemed destined to find a head in front of the goal, but it sailed over everybody, took a high bounce and found its way into the net to put GW in front. (GW 1, VCU 0)
  • 79th Minute -- The Colonials cushioned their advantage with Lightbourn's goal off a feed from Alexy Boehm. The junior forward received Boehm's cross near the penalty spot and quickly ripped a shot into the upper corner. (GW 2, VCU 0)
  • 83rd Minute -- After threatening much of the night, VCU finally broke through with a goal from Francesco Amorosino. Lyndsey Moreland sent a long service into the box and Amorosino managed to get a foot on it in front and direct it past Höfs. (GW 2, VCU 1)
  • NOTEWORTHY:

  • Höfs managed to shut down VCU's A-10 best offense in the face of constant pressure. The junior keeper made five of his seven saves after halftime. One important sequence came in the 70th minute with GW up 1-0. He managed to punch Siad Haji's close-range attempt out of bounds and then he caught a shot from Rafael Santos off the ensuing corner kick.

Höfs had to make one save after the Rams pulled within 2-1. He stayed low to smother a hard shot from Rafael Santos in the 87th minute.

  • Defenders Christian Lawal, Gabriel Seemungal, Joshua Yurasits and Reese Moore stayed busy throughout the night snuffing out VCU chances, too. The Rams put eight of their 26 shots on goal. They also had a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • Curry scored his first goal of the season and the sixth of his career.
  • With nine points, Lightbourn is tied with Brady O'Connor for second among Colonials. He's registered four of them in the past two games.
  • Boehm picked up his first point of the season. He logged 28 minutes off the bench Saturday.
  • GW picked up its first A-10 road win of the season. The Colonials are 3-5-1 away from home overall.
  • It was Craig Jones' 40th win as GW head coach.
  • UP NEXT: GW hosts Davidson Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Colonials close their home slate next week by celebrating Senior Day at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus next Saturday against Duquesne.
