Men's Soccer Leads Early, Falls Late Against No. 15 Saint Louis, 3-1

Final Stats

WASHINGTON, DC - Senior Joachim Walker scored in the 37th minute to give the George Washington men's soccer team a 1-0 halftime lead, but 15th-ranked Saint Louis netted three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the Colonials, 3-1, in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Mount Vernon Field Sunday.

Playing its highest-ranked opponent in the seven-year history of Mount Vernon Field, GW (7-7-1, 1-3-1 A-10) stood toe-to-toe with the No. 15 Billikens in the first half and broke through in the 37th minute on Walker's first goal of the season. Sophomore Mike Briscoe's long throw-in sailed over a group at the near post and bounced in the 18-yard box to Walker, whose header beat SLU goalkeeper Ross Kaufman to the lower left corner.

Saint Louis (9-2-3, 5-1-0 A-10), the two-time defending A-10 regular-season champions, got the equalizer just 1:12 into the second half on Scott Wisniewski's fourth goal of the season. Wisniewski deposited a hard left-footed shot to GW goalkeeper Greg Yahr's left from 16-yards out on an assist from Brian Grazier.

The Billikens put the match out of reach with goals in the 64th and 67th minutes. Leading scorer Kyle Patterson escaped his mark on the right post and touched in Tim Ream's ground-pass from the left wing at 63:13. Ream then found Wisniewski with a long service from the left and Wisniewski volleyed the ball in front to Jimmy Holmes, who quickly knocked the ball in from five-yards away.

GW outshot Saint Louis, 17-11, and threatened a number of times in the second half. Senior Thomas Stuber, who finished with a match-high eight shots, had several header attempts sail wide in the final period. The Colonials' strongest chance came in the 54th minute when senior Greg McKay's crossing pass was volleyed by a Billikens' defender onto the SLU goal, but Kaufman recovered to make the stop.

Five of GW's 17 shots finished on target, forcing Kaufman to make three stops. Yahr posted two saves in his first start since Oct. 6. The Colonials held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.

GW will look to snap its four-match winless streak at Duquesne, Nov. 2. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
