No. 20 Duquesne Hands GW 4-0 Defeat in Men's Soccer

Oct. 30, 2005

Final Stats

WASHINGTON, DC - Twentieth-ranked Duquesne University (12-3-0, 6-1-0 A-10) used three second-half goals to send the George Washington University men's soccer team (5-8-3, 2-5-1 A-10) to a 4-0 Atlantic 10 Conference loss, and most likely elimination from postseason contention, Sunday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

The Colonials only trailed 1-0 at the half but the Dukes broke the game wide open early in the second half when they scored goals in the 53rd and then 61st minute to take a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Junior Noah Salsi put DU ahead 2-0 when he lined a bullet from 35-yards out that slid off the fingertips of GW goalkeeper Greg Yahr (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West).

Salsi then helped make it 3-0 when his pass to senior Steve Mellor was converted for a score.

The Dukes added an insurance goal from senior Scott Gibson at the 85:34 mark when sophomore Greg Annan dribbled in and drew Yahr out of the box, then tapped it to Gibson who knocked it into an empty goal.

DU scored its first goal in the 12th minute when junior Tom Sochacki set up sophomore Travis MacKenzie for a header.

Both teams recorded 12 shots in the contest but 10 of the Dukes' shots were on goal.

Five different Colonials recorded one shot-on-goal that Dukes' goalkeeper Zach Varga denied. Varga's shutout was his eighth of the season.

GW wraps its regular season Saturday, Nov. 5th, at Mount Vernon. The Colonials will meet La Salle University for a 1:00 PM start.

The Colonials will honor their seniors with a ceremony prior to the game.
