Men's Soccer Wins Double Overtime Thriller, 2-1

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 2) - Forward Arnar Johannsson broke a 1-1 stalemate in the second overtime with a rocket from the top of the box to lift the Colonials to a 2-1 victory over the Duquesne Dukes at the Mt. Vernon Athletic Complex.

The Colonials (8-7, 5-5) struck first in the match when senior midfielder Matt Pilkington converted a free kick from twenty yards out, his 10th goal of the season. The Dukes formed a defensive wall ten yards from Pilkington on the play to prevent a direct shot. While their wall took away the majority of the goal, Pilkington was able to hook a shot into the top right corner past junior keeper Terry McNelis in the 32nd minute for the first score of the day.

The two squads would play a physical match the entire afternoon, denying either team from scoring. GW keeper Eric Lund, in his first career start, turned in a fine performance, notching eight saves on 22 shots. The lone DU goal occurred late in the second half.

The Colonials were able to stop the Dukes for 86 minutes of regulation until DU's leading scorer Damian Pottinger blasted a shot toward the goal off a deflected ball in the box. Lund dove to intercept the shot, when it ricocheted off a Colonial defender, past Lund and into the goal.

Knotted at one goal apiece, the two teams were unable to score in the first overtime. The Colonials broke through late in the second overtime. Sophomore forward Arnar Johannsson laced a shot past a diving McNelis in the 113th minute from the top of the box. Sophmore forward Fabio Andrade and junior Riccardo Forno assisted on the play. The score was Johannsson's eighth of the year.

The Colonials close out their season when they host St. Bonaventure University on Sunday, November 4 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon Athletic Complex.
