WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 4) - George Washington sophomore forward Arnar Johannsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/C.C. of Iceland) scored two second half goals to help lead the Colonials to a 3-1 victory over St. Bonaventure this afternoon, Nov. 4, at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The victory improves GW's record to 9-7 overall and to 6-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. St. Bonaventure falls to 6-12 overall and to 2-9 in the Atlantic 10.
The Bonnies got on the board first at the 17:52 mark when midfielder Kareem Reynolds found forward Anthony Battaglia on the left side of the box. Battaglia blasted a shot past GW keeper Nick Parypinski (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) for his fourth goal of the season to put the Bonnies in front.
The Colonials answered about 15 minutes later when senior Fridrik Omarsson (Garbaber, Iceland/C.C. of Iceland) sent a long ball forward to senior Matt Pilkington (Manchester, England/Sheffield Hallam). Pilkington then found junior Matthew Osborne (Bingham, Notts, England/Toothill Comprehensive School) in the box, Osborne converted the chance for his 10th goal of the season to tie the match at 1.
After the break, the two teams battled back and forth, but neither could break the one all tie until Johannsson struck in the 74th minute. Osborne ran down a Parypinski punt in the left corner and sent a cross into the middle of the box where Johannsson was able to send a beautiful header past St. Bonaventure keeper Mike Krupa to give the Colonials a 2-1 lead.
Johannsson notched his second goal of the day and 10th of the season seven minutes later. Junior Kirk Lewis (Beltsville, MD/St. John's College) served a long ball that senior co-captain Michael Goldman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was able to corral in the right corner. Goldman then sent a cross into the middle where Johannsson was waiting to send it into the high middle of the net behind Krupa.
