Men's Soccer Wraps Season With 3-0 Win Over La Salle

Nov. 5, 2005

Final Stats

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University men's soccer team (6-8-3, 3-5-1 A-10) closed out its 2005 season by scoring three second half goals in a two minute and thirty-two second span to defeat La Salle University (6-9-4, 3-4-2 A-10) 3-0 Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 match at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

Already eliminated from postseason contention, GW played spoilers by beating the Explorers who were on the bubble for earning an Atlantic 10 Championship spot.

With the game scoreless in the 51st minute, senior Frank Ambrosio (Windermere, FL/Bishop Moore Catholic) weaved through defenders on the left side of the field to knock in GW's first goal (1) unassisted.

The Colonials took a 2-0 lead just over two minutes later when Ambrosio found sophomore Abimbola Pedro (Lagos, Nigeria/King's College Lagos) near La Salle's net that he converted for a goal (3).

Pedro scored again just 18 seconds later when junior Arturo Pedroso (Coral Gables, FL/Ransom Everglades/Holy Cross) set him for the score (4).

Pedro's multi goal game was his first as a Colonial.

Eight different Explorers took recorded at least one shot in the contest including freshman Brian Barry, who notched three.

However, GW goalkeeper Derek Biss (Pittsfield, MA/St. Joseph's/Northfield Mt. Hermon) would not let La Salle get on the board as the senior made five saves to record his third shutout of the year.

Biss' five stops on Saturday gave him 274 for his GW career, putting him second all-time in program history.

The Colonials said goodbye to nine seniors who, Saturday, played their final game wearing the buff and blue.

Along with Biss and Ambrosio, GW honored the following seniors in a pre game ceremony recognizing their contributions to the program: Ben Mortimer (Leighton Buzzard, England/Cedars), Trevor Martin (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase), Steve Brown (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland), Andre Chapman (Wilbraham, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon, Matt Miller (Cincinnati, OH/Cincinnati Country Day), Jon Allen (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Ardsley/University of Rochester) and Kyle Renner (North Pole, AK/North Pole).

Most of the seniors were members of both GW's 2002 and 2004 A-10 Championships.
