Men's Soccer Squashes Spiders, 2-0
Colonials Hope to Qualify for Atlantic 10 Tournament
Nov. 9, 2002
WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman midfielder Steve Brown (Stony Point, NY/N. Rockland) scored the game-winning goal in the second half, as the Colonials topped the Richmond Spiders 2-0 at Mount Vernon Athletic Complex
With the victory, GW (11-8-0, 7-4-0) improved its chances to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Colonials will participate in the tournament if Duquesne triumphs over visiting St. Bonaventure a 7:00 p.m. match.
Richmond (10-6-3, 7-2-2) and GW battled to a scoreless first half, as neither team gained a significant advantage. The Colonials finally broke through in the 60th minute when Brown received a pass from fellow freshman Frank Ambrosio (Orlando, FL/Bishop Moore) in the box, which he rifled on goal. The shot was deflected by a defender and looped over the head of UR's charging keeper to put the Colonials up 1-0.
GW did not rest on its slim lead, and continued to pressure the Spiders' defense, striking again in the 76th minute when senior Matthew Osborne (Bingham. Notts, England/Toothill Comprehensive) started a give-and-go with senior Michael Goldman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) in the left wing of the box. Osborne received the pass back from Goldman, and broke toward the goal, beating the keeper with a shot from an impossible angle to push the Colonials' lead to two.
The Colonials await the result of tonight's match-up between Duquesne and St. Bonaventure to find out if they will be participating in the Atlantic 10 Tournament next weekend.
