WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Atlantic 10 rival La Salle at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

GW finishes its season with a 5-10-2 overall record and 2-4-2 mark in A-10 play.

The Colonials outshot the Explorers, 14-6, in the game but were unable to finish any of their chances, despite having the better opportunities.

La Salle (8-7-3, 5-2-1 A-10) struck early when Nick Becker sent the ball into the box following a corner kick and Joe Farrell flicked it in with his head in the 17th minute for the 1-0 lead, which the Explorers maintained for the rest of the game.

Senior Bailey Hinners had a good look off a corner kick late in the first half, but his header went right to La Salle goalkeeper John McCarthy.

The Colonials controlled possession in the second stanza, taking the first eight shots of the period. McCarthy was able to get a hand on a shot by junior Andri Alexandersson and knock it over the crossbar early in the half. In the 69th minute, McCarthy came off his line and Alexandersson got a header by him, but a La Salle defender was there to clear it away. Hinners had another good opportunity in the 81st minute, but McCarthy was able to smother his header from point-blank range.

GW sophomore goalie Jean-Pierre van der Merwe made four saves in his first game in over a month, while McCarthy stopped eight shots for the Explorers. Alexandersson took a game-high five shots, and the Colonials held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Prior to the game, the Colonials honored Hinners and fellow seniors Tyler Ranalli, Alex Sandland, Abdul Shaban and Francisco Solorazno in a Senior Day ceremony.
