WASHINGTON - George Washington men's soccer senior Yoni Berhanu is a trialist for Major League Soccer's D.C. United this week in an attempt to join the club for its initial preseason training camp in Florida.
Berhanu will be among 13 other trialists, including former Atlantic 10 rivals Ryan Richter (La Salle) and Charles Rodriguez (Charlotte), training with D.C. United this week before Florida training camp opens this Monday. Click here to see the full list of trialists.
This past fall's A-10 Midfielder of the Year, Berhanu was a key cog in GW's remarkable turnaround season and run to an appearance in the A-10 Championship title match with a team- and Atlantic 10-leading 11 goals and 26 points. He scored the deciding goal via a 25-yard free kick in a 1-0 win over Duquesne on Nov. 6 that gave the Colonials a share of their first A-10 regular-season crown since 1992.
Berhanu capped his four-year career with 55 points and 15 assists, both totals that rank just shy of 10th-best on GW's all-time list.
A native of Potomac, Md., and product of Sidwell Friends School, Berhanu was the 2007 Gatorade Washington, D.C., Scholastic Player of the Year, and went on to be named the A-10 Rookie of the Year in 2008.
