GW Athletics to Host Homecoming Next Weekend, Feb. 9-10
Men's and Women's Basketball Games, Tailgate Party, Title IX Celebration Highlight Weekend
Jan. 31, 2013
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University Department of Athletics and Recreation will proudly host Homecoming, February 9-10, in Foggy Bottom.
Highlighting the weekend of activities are a men's basketball game versus No. 9/10 Butler (potentially the first top-10 men's basketball team to visit the Charles E. Smith Center since 2000) presented by NovaCare, a women's basketball game also against Butler, pregame tailgate party prior to the men's clash with the Bulldogs, and a special Title IX celebration featuring Christine Brennan, USA Today columnist and ABC, ESPN, NPR and Fox Sports commentator as the keynote speaker.
"Homecoming is a time for all GW alumni to come back to campus and rally around a high-profile athletics event at their alma mater," noted Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero. "This year we will have two great basketball games, among a long list of special events and activities where we'll celebrate our storied history and Raise High the Buff and Blue."
Homecoming begins on Saturday, February 9 with a free, pregame tailgate from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. for all fans and alumni in FedEx Plaza (behind Funger Hall and Duques Hall), directly across G Street from the Charles E. Smith Center. Food and beverages will be provided, including free beer for all patrons ages 21+, for anyone with a ticket to the men's basketball game. A limited number of tickets remain for Saturday's game, click here to purchase yours now.
Fans and alumni will then cross G Street for the 2:00 p.m. tip-off when GW men's basketball hosts the nationally ranked Butler Bulldogs at the Charles E. Smith Center for the first time as Atlantic 10 foes. At the game, GW will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the program's run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1993 with members of the 1992-93 Colonials on hand. Additionally, members of the Colonials' five championship teams from 2011-12 (golf, men's tennis, men's soccer, men's and women's squash) will be recognized at halftime.
The following morning, Sunday, February 10th, GW will pay tribute to the 40th anniversary of the landmark legislation known as Title IX and its impact on women's athletics. Best-selling author Christine Brennan will join members of the GW community in discussing the history and future of women's athletics. GW Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion Dr. Terri Harris Reed will also moderate a panel discussion that will include Dr. Bonnie Morris, adjunct professor in women's studies; Diane Richardson, women's basketball assistant coach; Sarah Jo Lawrence, GW women's basketball alumna; Margie Foster-Cunningham, gymnastics head coach; and Lauren Whyte, senior volleyball player. Brunch attendees will receive complementary tickets to the GW women's basketball game versus Butler.
Following Sunday's brunch, GW women's basketball hosts Butler at 2:00 p.m., also marking the first-ever match-up of the women's programs as Atlantic 10 rivals.
George Washington's Board of Trustees, as well as the GW Athletics National Advisory Council will also be on campus during Homecoming.
