Eight GW Athletics Teams Recognized by NCAA With APR Public Recognition Award
At least six GW teams honored in each of the last seven years
The NCAA announced Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR) Public Recognition Awards today, recognizing teams across the country that finished with an APR in the top 10 percent in their sport.
GW's women’s cross country, golf, men's soccer, softball, men's tennis, men’s and women’s track and women's water polo teams were honored.
"With these remarkable Academic Progress Rates, we’re executing university leadership’s vision of Athletics being a highly visible display of discipline and excellence," said Assistant Athletics Director of Educational Support Services Danya Ellman. "We congratulate our exemplary student-athletes, educational support staff and coaches on maintaining the discipline to excel academically."
This continues a trend in which GW Athletics has seen at least six teams earn APR Public Recognition Awards in each of the last seven years.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I athletics teams across the country. It provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Today's announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
All Division I programs’ APR scores will be released publicly on May 23.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
