Colonials Lose Preseason Opener, 3-0

Aug. 21, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW men's soccer team lost its first preseason scrimmage, 3-0, to Richmond on Sunday, August 21 at the Mount Vernon Athletics Complex. The Colonials outshot the Spiders 14-8 for the game and owned a 10-2 advantage in the category in the second half, but couldn't get on the scoreboard.

Senior goalkeeper Derek Biss made three saves for the Colonials in the first period. Sophomore Greg Yahr replaced Biss at the half and faced two shots in the second frame.

Richmond got first-half goals from Colin Vint and Joe Dincecco to go up 2-0 at the intermission. The Spiders tacked on another goal with less than two minutes remaining in the match to produce the final score.

After appearing a little sluggish at the start, GW looked much sharper in the second half and controlled the pace of play for most of the period.

The Colonials' best two scoring opportunities came from senior captain Trevor Martin after halftime. It took a diving stop by Spiders' keeper Matt Cully to keep Martin's header off a corner kick out of the net, and Martin sent another header just over the crossbar on an indirect kick a few minutes later.

GW will begin its defense of its conference title on Friday, Sept. 2. The Colonials will meet NCAA Tournament participant and Patriot League champion American University in the DC College Cup at Georgetown. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
