George Washington men's soccer travels to Binghamton on Friday to start the 2017 season. The Colonials finish opening weekend at Lehigh on Sunday afternoon. (Season Preview)

LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials are coming off an 8-5-5 campaign that saw them land a point short of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

IN FOCUS: GW allowed just 12 goals in 18 matches last season with nine shutouts. The returning starters on defense include redshirt senior Ben Ogedegbe, sophomore Reese Moore and junior goalkeeper Thor Arne Höfs.

PRESEASON PICKS: GW was tabbed sixth in the A-10 preseason poll, released Thursday. The Colonials were picked behind favorite Fordham, Saint Louis, VCU, Dayton and Rhode Island in a vote of the league's coaches. Check out the full list and preseason all-conference team here.

FUN FACT: In 1965, GW began its debut season with a loss to Loyola (Md.). The Buff and Blue picked up its first season-opening victory in 1967, dropping Mount St. Mary's, 5-1.

SCOUTING BINGHAMTON: The Bearcats went 7-6-6 last season and finished sixth in the America East standings. They were picked eighth in the conference preseason poll. They return their top two scorers in Ben Ovetsky and Nikos Psarras, who both tallied five goals in 2016.

SCOUTING LEHIGH: The Mountain Hawks finished last season 7-10-1 and eighth in the Patriot League standings. Forwards Mark Forrest and Doyle Tuvesson both made the preseason all-conference team. Lehigh -- slotted seventh in the Patriot League preseason poll -- opens its season Friday night, hosting Rider.

COMING UP: GW is back in action Sept. 1, at St. Francis Brooklyn. The Colonials make their home debut Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. against William & Mary.
