Men's Soccer Ties UMBC in Exhibition Match, 1-1

Aug. 24, 2002

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - The Colonials and Retrievers battled to a 1-1 tie in a two-period exhibition game at George Washington Mount Vernon Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

University of Maryland Baltimore County got on the board halfway through the first half as junior midfielder Michael Joseph made a short cross to sophomore striker George Bakoulas who put away a one-timer past the GW's diving keeper, junior Eric Lund at the 19:34 mark. Lund had a solid first half despite the score, notching five saves on UMBC's 11 shots.

The Colonials turned the pressure up a notch in the second half, peppering the Retrievers' goal with eight shots, seven of which were on goal. GW would tie the game last in the second half when senior defender Kirk Lewis shot a bullet from the top of the box past the UMBC keeper into the top left corner of the net, tying the game, 1-1 (84:19). The teams did not play an overtime period in the exhibition.

The Colonials begin regular season play on Friday, August 30, when they face Georgetown in the opening game of the 2002 DC Classic at American University in a 12:00 pm match.
