GW Closes DC College Cup with Shutout Victory
Aug. 27, 2006 WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington junior Greg McKay registered his first goal of the season and assisted on another to lead the Colonials to a 2-0 victory against intra-District rival Howard in the final round of the DC College Cup at American University on Sunday afternoon. "It was a great comeback from our performance against Georgetown on Friday," said GW head coach George Lidster. "After losing Luke [Wildy], who is the quarterback of our team, to injury on Friday we needed to switch to a different strategy. We did that today and posted a good win against a good Howard team." GW (1-1-0) finished the sixth annual Cup with three points. Tournament host American and Georgetown, the only teams to win the event, will play for the Cup title at 5:00 pm. McKay spotted the Colonials a 1-0 lead near the close of the first half. The midfielder settled a clearance off freshman Mike Briscoe's throw-in and neatly tucked a bending, 30-yard shot into the upper right corner of the goal with six seconds remaining in the opening stanza. Howard (0-2-0) had a pair of solid opportunities to tie the match in the second half, but junior goalkeeper Greg Yahr was equal to the task on both occasions. Yahr made a diving stop on Joel Senior's hard shot from 25 yards away with just under 40 minutes to play and stopped Antoine Render's shot from eight yards out at the 60:49 mark. Junior Thomas Stuber added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when he headed home a cross from McKay. McKay's cross-field pass found an open Stuber on the left side of the box and the Wisconsin-native buried a diving header to the lower right corner. Briscoe narrowly missed scoring his first collegiate goal in the first half, but his header on fellow freshman Kyle Albrecht's free-kick service bounced over the crossbar. Yahr made five stops on 12 shots faced to pick up his first career shutout. Bison goalkeeper Chris Taylor turned away four of the Colonials' 17 shots. Wildy and McKay were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Joel Senior and Michael Okoh of Howard. The remainder of the All-Tournament Team will be announced following the Georgetown/American match. GW returns to the pitch on Friday, September 1 at Towson. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
