PHILADELPHIA, PA - George Washington sophomore midfielder Erick Perez-Segnini has been selected the Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Perez-Segnini scored the game-winning goal in double overtime against Howard on Sunday to earn Tournament MVP honors of the 2007 adidas DC College Cup.
Perez-Segnini's match-winner with three seconds left in the second overtime also proved to be the tournament-clinching goal, as American topped George Mason 2-1 in Sunday's Cup finale, leaving the Colonials as the only team to win both matches. The DC Cup title is GW's first in the seven-year history of the event and the 2-0 start is the program's best since 2002, a season in which the Colonials won the A-10 Championship. The Colonials are ranked third in this week's NSCAA Middle Atlantic Regional Top 10, trailing A-10 members Saint Louis and Xavier.
Perez-Segnini, who split the weekly honor with Fordham's Dean Stanic, also assisted a goal against the Bison for a career-high three points and added an insurance goal with nine seconds left in GW's 2-0 season-opening victory against American on Friday. Senior Abimbola Pedro and sophomores Andy Stadler and Luke Wildy were named to the All-Tournament Team.
GW kicks-off Longwood's Lancer Invitational in Farmville, VA, against Winthrop this Friday at 5:00 pm. The Colonials will face North Florida at Longwood's Athletics Complex on Sunday at 10:00 am.
