Oct. 28, 2004
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's soccer team (4-8-3, 3-3-2 Atlantic 10) will host two crucial Atlantic 10 matches this weekend. The Colonials will compete against Temple on Friday, Oct. 29 at 3:00 p.m. and take on Saint Joseph's on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1:00 p.m.
The Colonials have 11 points and are in seventh-place in the A-10 standings. The top six teams receive a berth in the conference's championship tournament that will be played at GW from Nov. 11-14. No squad has clinched a spot in the tournament yet and the top eight teams in the league are separated by just eight points heading into this weekend's action.
GW is in the midst of a three-game winning streak, including a 3-1 triumph against Dayton in its most recent outing on Oct. 24.
A pair of juniors sparked GW's offense in two victories last week. Andre Chapman notched a career-high five points in the Colonials' 4-2 win against Xavier on Oct. 22. Frank Ambrosio contributed a goal and an assist against the Musketeers and registered two goals versus Dayton.
Junior Jon Allen leads the team with six goals and 16 total points. His point total is tied for sixth in the A-10. Allen is also third in points versus conference foes with 11. Junior goalkeeper Derek Biss ranks sixth in the league with a 1.45 goals-against average in more than 1,200 minutes of play.
Temple is second in the conference with 17 points. It owns a 5-1-2 overall mark in league play and an 8-6-2 overall record. The Owls have won four straight games and are 5-1-2 since the beginning of October.
Goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan is the reigning A-10 Player of the Week after recording shutouts against Duquesne and St. Bonaventure last week. He ranks second in the A-10 with five blankings on the season. Hannigan also sits in second place in the conference with a 1.10 goals-against average.
Temple's defense is second in the league in goals allowed (17) and has given up just over a goal per game this year.
Stephen Bristow leads the club in points (11) and goals (4).
Saint Joseph's is 3-11-1 overall in 2004 and has posted a 2-5-1 record in league matches. The Hawks have been shut out in their last two outings and will play at Richmond on Oct. 29 before taking on GW.
The Hawks have been outshot 292-114 and have scored just 13 goals, while their opponents have tallied 41.
Saint Joe's keeper Chris Distefano has played in 14 games and is third in the A-10 with 76 saves. Christopher Powell is the Hawks' top scorer with three goals and seven points.
The Colonials lost twice to Temple last season, including a 2-0 loss in the Atlantic 10 Championship. GW is 1-1-1 in its last three meetings with the Hawks. The two clubs played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie last year.
