NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington junior midfielder Zach Abaie has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and earned a share of this week's Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award, it was announced Monday.

Abaie assisted four of the team's five goals to help GW post important league victories at Massachusetts, 3-0, and Rhode Island, 2-1, to vault into a tie for second place in the A-10 standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

He assisted goals by Mattia Melillo and Yoni Berhanu just 60 seconds apart to cement the three points against the Minutemen, then found the heads of Mike Burke and Seth Rudolph via set pieces as the Colonials seized another three points against the Rams.

Abaie split this week's A-10 honor with Duquesne's Joshua Patterson, who also joined the GW midfielder on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Abaie's conference award marks the third this season for a Colonials' player following Berhanu (9/26) and Melillo (10/10) earlier this fall. He's also the first GW player to receive National Team of the Week recognition since two-time All-Region standout Andy Stadler in September 2008.

GW (7-6-2, 5-2-0 A-10) hosts two matches at Mount Vernon Field this coming weekend - Friday versus St. Bonaventure (4-10-3, 0-5-2) at 3 p.m., and Sunday against Patterson and streaking Duquesne (7-7-2, 4-2-1) at 1 p.m.

Sunday's contest marks the final home match for seniors Yoni Berhanu, Mike Burke, Brice Carr and Jake Davis, as well as head coach George Lidster, who is retiring at the end of the season after 24 years at the helm of the Colonials. With two victories this weekend, Lidster will reach a program-best 200 for his career.
