Men's Soccer Draws Crosstown Match-up Versus American in NCAA Tournament

Nov. 18, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC - 2002 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Champion George Washington (13-8-0) will take on Washington D.C. rival American University (12-7-1) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23, at AU's Reeves Field in a 1:00 p.m. match.

The Colonials, who earned the fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the school's history when they won the Atlantic 10 Tournament this past weekend, face AU who received one of the 22 at-large bids given out by the NCAA. The winner of Saturday's match advances to face Maryland on Wednesday, Nov. 27 in College Park.

GW last competed in the NCAA Tournament in 1989 when they advanced to the Sweet 16 after topping George Mason University for their first tournament victory in the history of the university. The Colonials hold a 1-4 all-time record in the NCAA Tournament in four previous appearances ('74, '77, '78, '89).

American and GW last faced each other in the 2001 D.C. College Cup, when the Eagles took a 1-0 victory. Both teams participated in the 2002 D.C. College Cup, but did not play each other as AU and GW both posted 2-0 records at the tournament. The Eagles edged the Colonials for the College Cup title with more goals scored for the tournament.
