GW Plays To 2-2 Draw With Albany

WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 4, 1999) -- George Washington tallied a 2-2 overtime draw with Albany this afternoon in the first match of the Hoya Soccer Classic at Georgetown.

Sophomore forward Jason Holloway gave GW a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when he redirected a 20-yard bid by midfielder Evan Nierman past Albany goalkeeper Trevor Serraro from seven yards out.

Bryan Grabon equalized for Albany in the 25th minute when his 25-yard free kick struck the left post and caromed into the goal. The ball appeared to not cross the goal line before a GW defender got to it, but the linesman indicated it had crossed the goal line prior to the defnder reaching the ball. Michael Goldman was whistled for the foul that setup Grabon's free kick.

Senior midfielder Marty Williams put GW back on top in the 41st minute when he slammed home a Goldman corner kick from the right.

Albany went a man down in the 64th minute when Ashtian Holmes received a red card for intentionally pulling down Holloway from behind on a breakaway just outside the box. Nierman's ensuing free kick was just wide right.

GW missed a chance to increase the lead when freshman defender Bjarni Thrastarson played a long ball from the GW defense across midfield to Holloway, who beat two defenders to create a one-on-one chance against the Albany goalkeeper Serraro. Serraro charged off his line and snuffed Holloway's point blank bid from 16 yards out central in the box.

With GW controlling the run-of-play in the second half, Albany equalized once again in the 82nd minute when Charlie Justino banged in a loose ball in the GW box from six yards out after an Albany free kick from the left.

Neither team created many chances in overtime, save for a golden opportunity for Albany in the 114th minute. With Albany attacking down the right flank, an Albany player played a slow, looping cross into the back left side of the box 10 yards out. Jon Brainard fired a bicylce kick shot into the right post, and Jason Warshaw somehow shot wide left and high from four yards out in front of the GW net.

Michael Jelencovich tallied four saves between the pipes for GW, and Serraro recorded two for Albany. Albany held a slim 17-15 advantage in shots, while GW posted a 12-10 advatage in corner kicks.
