Nierman, Goldman Lead GW To 3-1 Win

WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 6, 1999)-- Senior midfielder Evan Nierman tallied the game winning goal and assisted on another to lead George Washington to a 3-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's in the second round of the Hoya Soccer Classic at Georgetown. The win was the 100th career victory for George Washington head coach George Lidster. Lidster, the winningest coach in GW history, improved his career record to 100-83-27.

Georgetown defeated Albany 2-0 in the second match today as the Hoyas captured the championship of their tournament. With a win and a draw, GW placed second. Albany was third with a draw and a loss, and Mount St. Mary's was fourth with two losses. Nierman, sophomore forward Jason Holloway and sophomore midfielder Michael Goldman were named to the All-Tournament team. Georgetown's goalkeeper Tyler Purtill, who recorded two shutouts for the Hoyas, was the tournament MVP.

"I thought we played with good composure today," said Lidster. "We fought hard for 90 minutes and I felt we did a good job of controlling the run-of-play. I'm happy the lads got the result they deserved, and I'm pleased with our performance in the tournament."

Holloway put the Colonials ahead 1-0 in the 28th minute. Nierman gave Goldman a short pass on the left wing and Goldman lofted a cross toward the back post toward Holloway, who slammed a 12-yard header into the left side of the goal for the tally. It was Holloway's second goal in as many matches.

Greg Forte nearly drew the Mount level two minutes later when his eight-yard header on a corner kick struck the right post.

Duncan Gladwin scored an equalizer for Mount St. Mary's in the 51st minute on a fluke goal. Gladwin played a 35-yard cross toward the back post from the left wing which caught the GW defense off-guard. The cross struck the right post and caromed into the net for the Mounts' only tally of the match.

Nierman scored the eventual game-winner in the 66th minute on a brilliant 24-yard free kick which curled neatly around the wall into the left upper-90. Brandon Scarfield fouled GW's Jeff Greenspan to create the free kick opportunity as Greenspan was charging to goal.

Greg Loftus almost tallied an equalizer in the 80th minute when his 25-yard blast dipped and struck the crossbar.

Freshman Andre Cardim scored GW's final tally in the 88th minute. Marty Williams was fouled several yards off the right endline and 10 yards in from the touchline by the Mounts' Niall Lepper, giving the Colonials a free kick. Goldman lined the free kick toward the near post, and Cardim beat his defender to the ball and confidently headed home the goal.

Senior goalkeeper Michael Jelencovich was in premier form, recording six saves as Mount St. Mary's outshot GW 18-12. Jelencovich came up big on several occasions for GW, including a snuff on Simon Hodkin's 15-yard blast in the 77th minute bidding to tie the score. Rob Ray tallied three saves for the Mount.
