Georgia Southern Outlasts GW

SPARTANBURG, SC (Sept. 11, 1999) -- Georgia Southern survived playing two men down and tallied twice on penalty kicks to defeat George Washington 5-4 this afternoon in the first match of the Mary Black/Wofford College Fall Classic in Spartanburg, SC.

Jeremy McClure scored four of Georgia Southern's goals in the match. His early strikes in the 3rd minute and 12th minute gave Georgia Southern a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Freshman midfielder Riccardo Forno, playing in his first match of the season after suffering an ankle sprain in the preseason, scored for GW in the 23rd and 27th minutes to draw the Colonials even.

The tie score was short-lived, however, as David Fisk put Georgia Southern back on top 3-2 in the 28th minute.

The second half quickly turned into a wild and woolly affair. McClure expanded the Georgia Southern lead to 4-2 when he tapped in a penalty kick in the 53rd minute, his third goal of the match.

After receiving a yellow card in the first half, Georgia Southern's Alex Branch was ejected in the 54th minute after receiving a second yellow card, and GW had a man advantage. Sophomore forward Jason Holloway wasted no time and scored in the 60th minute on a pass from sophomore midfielder Michael Goldman to make the score 4-3. Holloway, the GW scoring leader with three goals, has scored in each of GW's three matches this season.

Georgia Southern's Alan Woodrum received yellow cards in the 56th and 70th minutes, resulting in his ejection and leaving Georgia Southern two men down.

Freshman forward Kirk Lewis gave GW an equalizing goal in the 70th minute off a pass from freshman Andre Cardim, knotting the score at 4-4.

The crucial play of the match occured in the 76th minute. GW goalkeeper Michael Jelencovich pulled down McClure in the box on a breakaway, and Jelencovich received a red card. Sophomore Nick Parypinski stepped between the pipes for GW but was unable to save McClure's penalty kick and Georgia Southern grabbed a 5-4 lead.

With Georgia Southern two men down and packed into their defensive third with a one goal lead, GW was unable to score in the final 14 minutes and GW suffered their first loss of the season.

Jelencovich tallied all six of GW's saves prior to being ejected. John Miglarese recorded five saves for Georgia Southern.

In the second match of the tournament, Bucknell shutout host Wofford 2-0. Bucknell (2-1-0) and Georgia Southern (1-3-0) meet at noon Sunday to determine the tournament champion, while GW (1-1-1) and Wofford (0-3-0) square off at 2:30 pm.
