Late Goal Lifts George Mason Over GW

FAIRFAX, VA (Sept. 15, 1999) -- Luis-Carlos Sossa scored in the 82nd minute for George Mason to break a 1-1 tie and give the Patriots a hard-fought 2-1 victory over George Washington this afternoon at George Mason Stadium.

After a GW player commited a foul 20-yards out at the top of the box, Jose Maldonado played a quick re-start into the right side of the box which Sossa ran onto and fired a 12-yard liner past onrushing GW goalkeeper Michael Jelencovich.

After a scoreless first half that saw George Mason outshoot GW 8-6, the Colonials dominated play in the second half. Sophomore forward Jason Holloway scored in the 51st minute to give GW a 1-0 lead. Freshman forward Matthew Osborne played a long feeding pass from midfield between two defenders to sophomore midfielder Michael Goldman on a breakaway. Goldman kept the two defenders at bay as he maneuvered into the left side of the box and slotted a centering pass to Holloway as George Mason goalkeeper Jame Teixeira charged off his line to cut down Goldman's angle. Holloway provided a routine finish to record his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Patriots' Laszlo Juhasz was sent off in the 56th minute for a second yellow card and George Mason went a man down for the remainder of the match.

The Colonials' lead was short-lived as Josh Ferguson equalized for George Mason with a nine yard chip shot over Jelencovich in the 59th minute. Jose Maldonado gave Sossa a neat lofted pass over the GW defense to create the shot.

GW kept up intense pressure for the remainder of the match but failed to capitalize on several opportunities. Senior midfielder Marty Williams saw his four yard shot deflect off a defender in the 63rd minute. Osborne created an opportunity in the 80th minute when used some fancy footwork to keep a ball in play on the right endline and lay a pass back to Evan Nierman, who missed wide left on a 15-yard shot from central in the box.

GW's Jelencovich recorded an acrobatic airborne save diving to his left in the 81st minute on a 20-yard rocket by Chris Villamil. The Patriots went ahead 2-1 just a minute later on Sossa's tally.

Osborne made a bid for a dramatic goal in the 88th minute when his 20-yard shot slammed off the crossbar, and Jeff Greenspan's follow shot was saved by George Mason defender Matt Friedman.

GW outshot the Patriots 19-14 for the match, 13-6 in the second half. Jelencovich recorded five saves between the pipes for GW, and Teixeira tallied two for George Mason.

GW's Goldman and George Mason's Maldonado entered the match tied for the South Atlantic Region lead with four assists each for the season. The duo each tallied an assist, so they are still tied atop the leader board with five assist apiece.
