FAIRFAX, VA (Sept. 21, 1999) -- Howard tallied three goals over a three-minute span early in the match to grab a 3-0 lead and cruise to a 4-1 victory over George Washington tonight on the wet artificial turf of Howard Stadium.
Carlington Clarke began the scoring for Howard in the 16th minute when his ambitious 25-yard shot found GW goalkeeper Michael Jelencovich cheating off his line and looped over the out-of-position keeper. Hasim Anderson scored for Howard a minute later when Clarke chipped a pass over the GW defense toward goal and Anderson stuck out his leg to deflect the pass into the net from four yards. The final tally of the burst came in the 18th minute as Damion Delgado chipped a ball into the stunned GW defense for the third goal.
Freshman forward Matthew Osborne got GW on the scoreboard with a strike in the 40th minute. After Bjarni Thrastarson played a 40-yard free kick into the goal box, the ball caromed out to Osborne at the top of the box and Osborne looped a 20-yard shot over Howard goalkeeper Lyndon Burgess.
Howard scored the final tally on a counterattack in the 85th minute. Damion Virtue slipped a pass from midfield to Edwin Chapman, who beat onrushing keeper Nick Parypinski from 14 yards.
Howard outshot GW 17-14 for the match. Jelencovich recorded five saves in the first half before being replaced by Parypinski at halftime. Parypinski made two saves in the second half as GW controlled the run-of-play in the second half.
GW opens the home slate, as well as the Atlantic 10 Conference portion of the schedule, with a 3:30 pm contest Sunday against Virginia Tech at South Riding Field.
