FAIRFAX, VA (Sept. 26, 1999) -- Sophomore forward Okey Ogbuawa tallied twice midway through the second half to lift Virginia Tech to a 2-1 victory over George Washington this afternoon in both team's Atlantic 10 Conference opener at South Riding Field in Loudoun County, Virginia.
Ogbuawa scored in the 66th minute after Innocent Wamey beat a GW defender on the right endline and slipped a centering pass past GW keeper Michael Jelencovich at the near post, leaving Ogbuawa with a six-yard finish into an open net.
Ogbuawa tallied the game-winner in the 74th minute with a nearly identical play. Fred Silva played a ball into the right corner for Greg Nicks, who centered a low cross from the right endline to Ogbuawa in front the goal for a seven-yard finish.
Sophomore forward Jason Holloway gave GW a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Ted Tucker took a free kick from midfield and played a deep cross into the Virginia tech defense. Matthew Osborne flicked a pass with his head over the last two Virginia Tech defenders, leaving Holloway 25-yards out and one-on-one with Virginia Tech goalkeeper Colin Kibler. Kibler rushed off his line toward Holloway, who slipped around the keeper and finished a three-yard shot into an open net.
The match was a rough, physical affair that was evenly contested throughout. Virginia Tech was whistled for 26 fouls and four yellow cards, while GW tallied 21 fouls and three cautions. Both teams notched 11 shots. Jelencovich recorded three saves for GW while Kibler made four for Virginia Tech.
GW returns to action Friday with a 3:00 pm match against Fordham at South Riding Field. Virginia Tech hosts La Salle in Blacksburg at 4:00 pm Friday.
