No. 11 Men’s Squash Rallies to Defeat Cornell in Season Finale
Colonials Tie Highest Ranking in Program History
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 11 George Washington men’s squash rallied from a semifinal loss on Saturday to defeat No. 14 Cornell, 6-3, and clinch an end-of-season ranking of 11th in the nation in the Hoehn Cup (B-Division 11/12 playoff on Sunday afternoon.
GW (9-8) edged Cornell 5-4 earlier this season, sweeping the series with Sunday’s win and concluding nationals with a 2-1 record in the competitive Hoehn Cup, which featured teams ranked Nos. 8-16 in the CSA National Rankings.
The Colonials fell behind, 2-1, after the first round of matches, with junior Billy Berner providing the victory by way of a 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6 win over Alex Jung at No. 6.
GW moved ahead, 4-1, after wins at Nos. 8, 5, and 2. Junior Omar Mussehl earned a sweep at No. 8 over Benjamin Francis, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6, while freshman Juan Sebastian Laguna took on a marathon five-game win at No. 5, 12-10, 7-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-7. Junior Oisin Logan widened the Colonials lead at No. 2, beating out Andrew Muran in an 11-8, 11-1, 4-11, 11-5 victory.
Senior Nicolas Valderrama picked up a key win when he prevailed, 11-13, 11-5, 11-3, 11-7, over Sebastian Obieta-Chichizola at No. 7.
Moments later, senior Andres de Frutos completed a comeback match of his own rallying from a 1-0 deficit to win, 5-11, 14-12, 11-9, 11-4, to cement the GW victory at 6-3.
Andres de Frutos concludes his collegiate career with 48 individual victories, which ranks him third all-time at GW. Nicolas Valderrama and Josh Marks also concluded their careers in Sunday’s match, and finish with 28 and 21 victories across four seasons respectively.
