ANNAPOLIS, MD - The George Washington University men's squash team, ranked #29 in the preseason poll, competed in four matches over the weekend at the Navy Invitational. The Colonials played three matches on Saturday and one on Sunday, winning the first two but dropping the final pair.
GW earned their first win of the young season, in their first match at the tournament, defeating #32 Columbia, 5-4, on Saturday. Freshman Max Collins tallied his first collegiate win when he defeated Suleman Khoja 3-0. Junior Jarryd Commerford took the deciding match, blanking John Kamfonas 3-0.
In Saturday's middle match, the Colonials were perfect, winning all of their games by a 3-0 score on their way to downing #39 Notre Dame 9-0. Collins notched his second win of the day and fellow freshmen Matt Grossman and David Litner both picked up the first victories of their college careers.
In their third and final match of the day, GW was upset by #37 Virginia, 5-4. The two teams were tied at four apiece heading into the ninth and final game, but junior Matt Plevelich came up just short, falling 3-1 to Nick Flanagan, who secured the Cavaliers' victory. Juniors Alex Funk, Stefan Georg, Jarryd Commerford and sophomore Bradley Birenbaum each ended the day with three wins.
